7 TIPS TO SURVIVE WHOLE30 WITHOUT STARVING

Happy Whole30! Over the past few years, I have provided you with a super comprehensive Whole30 Resource guide, the Ultimate Guide to Eating Out on Whole30, how to pull off Whole30 While Pregnant, so many Whole30 compliant recipes, and of course, the best fitness fashion. Well, today, I am going to keep it super simple for you. Curious how you will make it through Whole30 without binge eating on a box of Captain Crunch (my friend did that btw)? These are my 7 ride or die, til death do us part, tips to help you survive Whole30 without starving to death. Make sure you check out My Life Well Loved, Stilettos and Diapers, and Happily Hughes for their weekly Whole30 updates and workouts.

SURVIVE WHOLE30 WITHOUT STARVING

1. Make a plan.

Yall, I am so serious. Plan out your meals, plan out your snacks, and plan out your workouts. And I know you don’t want to hear this, but making a plan includes meal prep. I recommend grocery shopping on Saturday or Sunday. Make your list, check it twice, and only choose things that are NOT naughty and just nice. I have created a WONDERFUL Whole30 shopping list to help you. PRO TIP: When shopping for food items, look for the Whole30 stamp of approval. This will eliminate any concerns!

Before you go out to dinner, make a plan. You do not have to be hermit when completing a Whole30, BUT you cannot use eating out as an excuse. Make sure you check out my guide to eating out on Whole30 before you leave your house. I have even included a handy printable that you can save on your phone and reference when you head out.

There will be days you are exhausted and cannot think about food. If you have your meals planned out and your fridge stocked with healthy goodness, this will prevent a binge session with your pal Captain Crunch. In terms of meal prep, if you have a very demanding job or crazy kids or both, I highly recommend doing some of the prep work on Sunday. Cut up your veggies. Cook a few meals for the week. EMBRACE LEFTOVERS. Do what you need to do to be prepared. With that being said…

2. Enlist the help of a meal delivery service.

Yall, we would not survive without Nourish Foods. Whether we are on Whole30, trying to eat clean, or just trying to survive the week, Nourish provides us with chef-inspired meals that are Whole30 compliant, that contain REAL, WHOLE FOOD ingredients, and are super easy to heat up. This is not one of those services that sends you the ingredients, and you still have to cook. I totally don’t understand the point of that honestly. And I will be honest with you, the food is AMAZING and more delicious than anything I ever cook. Use code LUTZ20 for 20% off your first order! If you try it, please post a picture on social and tag me @lifelutzurious. I can’t wait to hear about your experience!

3. Get your friends and family on board.

Look, I am not saying ditch every single friend that eats pizza and drinks beer every night, but I am saying completely cut ties with these people for 30 days. JUST KIDDING. BUT, I do recommend getting your pals on board. This is my 4th year of doing Whole30. This is the 1st year my husband has done it with me. Trust me, it’s much easier drinking our 2019 Italian Sparkling Water together than it was watching him drink wine every night. Misery loves company, amirite? If you have people that will do it with you, that’s even better. If not, at least let them know what to expect and what your goals are for completing the program.

4. STOP COUNTING CALORIES.

Guys, this meal plan will not work if you are trying to starve yourself. Load up on all the protein, veggies, and healthy fats you can handle. EAT EAT EAT and EAT SOME MORE. Need more calories? Healthy fats, such as an avocado will help you feel full. We also eat a TON of potatoes too, since we workout so much. I also just started adding Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides Creamer to my coffee every morning. With 10g of protein, this gives me additional calories and fat to hold me over until lunch. AND I hear it makes you look young. Sign me up, k thanks bai.

Seriously though, I better not hear about how much weight you wanna lose or how you only ate 1000 calories today. WHAT. Above all else: LOSE THE DIET MENTALITY. The point of Whole30 is to help you form a HEALTHY relationship with food. I don’t want you to end up resenting carrots and never eating carrot cake again. See what I did there?

In all seriousness, HAVE FUN! Like I said, get out of the diet mentality. Challenge yourself to love food in a different way. Find foods you enjoy and create amazing meals out of them. Lately, we have gotten the whole family involved in cooking. We are eating healthier, the kids are eating healthier, it’s a win-win. Sure, we miss our wine. Especially after the shit show that is called bedtime. But it’s ONLY 30 days. We can do ANYTHING for 30 days.

5. Incorporate snacks if you absolutely need to.

I know, I know. The book says no snacks. BUT I would rather you incorporate snacks than completely fall off the wagon or feel miserable all day. I love carrots and Tessemaes Ranch. RX Bars are not necessarily compliant, but I don’t care. I can’t survive the day without them. Make sure you read the ingredients, but I typically opt for the Chocolate and Sea Salt. Another great snack idea? Eat a smaller portion of your lunch or dinner from the previous day to get you to the next meal. As long as you are not replacing a meal, a smoothie is a great option as well. But speaking of snacking, I have a PRO TIP for you…

6. DRINK WATER.

Who else has a toddler that acts like a damn camel right before bedtime? SO. THIRSTY. right? Well, this will be you during Whole30. Here’s a pro tip for ya. Feel like you are starving to death? Imagine eating an apple. If this doesn’t sound good to you, it means you are thirsty. Instead of reaching for a snack, drink 8 ounces of water. I promise you will feel better. if an apple sounds great, eat one. Then drink some water. I am aim to drink half my body weight in water each day…so approximately 50 ounces. JUST KIDDING, I weigh much more than that. I have loved this Hydroflask water bottle with a straw top to keep my water cold and delicious all day. At 32 ounces, you can easily plan out how many bottles you need to drink per day to reach your goal.

7. Exercise.

For me, exercise is an excellent way to relieve stress, take my mind off things that give me anxiety, and escape for 45 minutes of the day. When I am eating well and exercising, I feel like I can conquer anything. Don’t have time to go to the gym? Make sure you check out my quick in-home workout with pregnancy modifications. Something else that motivates me? New workout clothes! What a great excuse to buy something for yourself that will make you feel confident. Here are some favorites I am loving right now…

8. DON’T QUIT.

I know I said 7 tips, but this one needs to be addressed. You will feel AWFUL around day 4 or 5. You will feel sluggish, your workouts will suck, and your sleep will be OH SO ANNOYINGLY interrupted by some crazy dreams. Keep going, your body is detoxing. Around day 10, you may see some weight gain. STOP WEIGHING YOURSELF. Day 13, you will start to turn the corner. Skin brightens, the brain fog clears, and you will sleep SO SOUNDLY. Give it a chance, and I promise you will reap the rewards.
