HOW TO FORM HEALTHY SKINCARE HABITS IN YOUR 30’S AND 40’S

It seems everywhere we turn, people are trying to show us how to look younger and prevent aging, especially in our 30’s and 40’s. In fact, in the past year, I personally have felt the pressures of aging. Am I too old to wear this? To late in my life to start something new? How will I follow my dreams at almost 4o years old?

As I have learned more about skincare, I have truly grown to enjoy it more. I love to research and try new products, finding options that I hope you guys will love. But I would be remiss to not acknowledge the ageism and sexism behind society’s obsession with beauty and “aging gracefully.”

With that being said, I feel like it is completely fine (and normal) to want to improve ourselves physically and partake in some self care (especially now…thanks #2020), without completely succumbing to the pressures of anti-aging in today’s world.

So, I have partnered with Colleen Rothschild Beauty to discuss how to form healthy skincare habits in your 30’s and 40’s to feel beautiful and confident and age gracefully to become the best version of ourselves. Make sure you stick around to the end to get information about their huge birthday sale, starting TODAY.

HYDRATE. HYDRATE. THEN HYDRATE MORE.

During my initial consult with my physician about Botox, the first thing she asked me was “how much water do you drink in a day?” And to be completely transparent, I was not proud of my response. Typically, we should be drinking approximately 50% of our body weight in ounces, but you can calculate you water intake here to get the exact amount.

Before you can even think about the other healthy scincare habits, make sure you are hydrating both on the inside–not only for your skin but also for your digestion, weight management, and increased energy levels. More on hydrating the outside of your body shortly.

BECOME OBSESSED WITH SPF

If you are not consistently using sunscreen at this point, it is crucial that your start immediately. And I don’t necessarily mean sunscreen before you head to the pool–I mean sunscreen every single day, preferably reapplying every 4 hours.

And don’t just trust me, take it from skincare guru Colleen Rothschild herself: “UVA rays tan your skin. They penetrate deep into the skin which can cause premature wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of photo-aging. These UVA rays have been linked to skin cancer, while UVB rays cause redness and sunburn on the skin’s surface.

Applying an SPF sunscreen of 15 or higher is recommend to defend against skin damage. However, an SPF of 25+ is ideal for most skin and provides 97% protection against the damaging rays of the sun.”

FOCUS ON A HYDRATING CLEANSER

Remember how I mentioned hydrating your skin on the inside and outside? One key step to reducing fine lines and wrinkles is by starting your skincare regimen with a hydrating cleanser. In fact, using the wrong type of cleanser can actually cause your skin to age prematurely.

I absolutely LOVE this luxurious lutzurious cleansing balm. Not only does it remove makeup quickly and effectively, it also smoothes and hydrates your skin. You will literally feel like you stepped out of a spa each time you wash your face. During the winter months, I typically follow this up with the Intense Hydrating Mask overnight for ultimate hydration.

MAKE VITAMIN C YOUR FRIEND

I was literally 2020 years old when I started using a Vitamin C serum. And now I won’t go a day without one. I am not sure what rock I was living under, but Vitamin C will change your life. In fact, Vitamin C is the one ingredient every dermatologist will say you need. It actually stimulates collagen production, improving clarity and radiance, while also protecting your skin from pollution and sun damage. Go ahead and check out the reviews for this Vitamin C Treatment Complex and thank me later.

NOW LET’S TALK ACIDS

As we age, our collagen production slows down drastically, and our skin starts to lose elasticity. One thing you can do is add a hyaluronic or mandelic acid (refines and resurfaces). Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in our bodies, mostly in our joints, eyes, and skin. Fun fact here: for my daytime job, my team actually sells a hyaluronic acid knee injection that treats osteoarthritis.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to inject HA to get the benefits. It’s actually one of the most common ingredients in skincare products and can be found in one of my go-to Colleen Rothschild products: the Extreme Recovery Cream. It provides continuous moisture, while fighting fine lines and wrinkles. And of course, it feels insanely delicious.

BE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR SKINCARE REGIMEN

Wait, hold up. You mean I need to do more than just wash my face and go to bed? Yes, ma’am. Find a skincare regimen and stick to it. The older I get, the more I realize that the key to success with anything in life is consistency. It doesn’t have to be anything long or drawn out. But your routine does need to address your individual needs and be used consistently–in the morning and in the evening. Remember, our goal is to ditch the bad habits from our 20’s, so we can form healthy skincare habits in our 30’s and 40’s.

But, Lindz I don’t know where to start. Well, that is why I am here to help you. You can always create a personalized skincare regimen OR you can seek out a set that meets your needs. I actually purchased my first, full skincare regimen a few years ago from Colleen. After meeting with her, we figured out exactly what my skin needed. And honestly, entering into my mid-thirties, I was late to the game. They grow up so fast, don’t they? I started using her AM Skincare Routine and PM Skincare Routine, then we slowly started adding in ancillary products.

If this seems daunting, I highly recommend her Discovery Collection. It’s a great way to start forming positive skincare habits in your 30’s and 40’s, while trying some of Colleen’s best selling products.

EMBRACE SERUMS

A few of my favorite Colleen Rothschild serums include Face Oil No9, the Retinol Supreme Oil, and my new go-to product–the CBD Face Oil. More on that in a bit. For now, let’s talk about The Retinol Supreme Oil. It actually contains the highest concentration of stabilized retinol, which encourages healthy skin renewal, highly potent Vitamin C to counteract the havoc brought upon by free radicals and environmental toxins, and nine plant-based oils.

But why Retinol? For years, new anti-aging products have been introduced to the market. However, not many have been able to outlast or show longer lasting results than those with the ingredient Retinol. It helps minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, clear pores, and improve dull skin, which results in a brighter, younger-looking complexion.

In your 30’s and 40’s, Retinol will actually help slow down the signs of aging and can actually be used as a preventative in your 20’s.

Ok, so what if I cannot use Retinol or don’t want to use Retinol? Find what works for you! Adding a serum of some sort to your skincare regimen–especially in your 30’s and 40’s–will help keep your skin hydrated and nourished.

I recently started using the CBD Face Oil, and I am OBSESSED. With only 4 ingredients, it truly packs a punch. It’s also 100% Organic, Vegan, free from colorants and fragrance, and is Made in the USA. One of the key ingredients, cannabidiol oil, helps skin rediscover a state of equilibrium by balancing oil production and combating the signs of aging. The packaging is gorgeous, and this oil feels incredible on your skin.

INVEST IN AN EYE CREAM

Again, I feel like this one is obvious, but I only started using an eye cream a few years ago when Colleen introduced me to her Complete Eye Cream. I swear every time I don’t get enough sleep, the first place you see it is under my eyes. Dark circles, wrinkles, and saggy skin wreck havoc on my appearance. There are some really expensive eye creams out there, but find what works for you. You don’t have to spend an insane amount of money for an eye cream to be effective. Pro tip: use day and night for maximum results.

FIND JOY IN YOUR SKINCARE PRODUCTS

Like Marie Kondo says: if it doesn’t bring you joy, get rid of it. Seriously though, it takes 21 days to form a habit. That’s a long time, especially in our instant gratitude-wired-society. And trust me, I am the queen of instant gratitude, So, when it comes to skincare, find products that smell and feel fabulous. I promise it will make forming healthy skincare habits in your 30’s and 40’s much easier–and enjoyable.
